With a population of million, it is one of the three factories operated in the city of Osnabluk in northern Germany. However, in 2005, its actual load was close to 309000 population (COD 80 mg/L), which made the nitrogen input level exceed the capacity of the plant.

In order to deal with this situation, engineer Peter Sikora organized a team to develop an alternative process based method for biological nitrogen removal. Their proposal was evaluated within the scope of the factory's idea management plan, called "my idea". The core of the proposal involves the use of existing basins and established biotechnology projects.

The factory initially used centrifugal pump, but its mechanical seal calcified, the pump leaked, and corrosive lime water penetrated into the motor. Therefore, these pumps can only be used for a few weeks at a time.
